Recent newcomer, The Cabana Cafe & Design Studio, is my latest favourite coffee spot for a cosy brew and brunch in Vientiane.
If coffee is an important part of your morning, or if you are in need of a chic chill-out spot, then The Cabana Cafe, located on central Quai Fa Ngum, facing the Mekong River, is the place for you.
The Cabana has a fabulously rustic, minimalist interior which is not surprising given the owner is interior designer Nilada Ratanavong, former owner of Maison Matilda. But The Cabana follows the same philosophy, serving simple, well-presented food with attention to detail and friendly staff. And that’s a winning formula in my book.
Honest, simple elegance
The Cabana Cafe & Design Studio has all the elements of a design studio: creative use of space and materials; rustic, honest and simple. Cosy, wood-and-rattan elements are interspersed with green foliage and quirky pieces. The nook by the French windows is just pure bliss – but you will need to get here early to beat me to it! The atmosphere is soothing with calming playlists, earthy tones and cool airconditioning. And, most importantly, a great location: front and centre on one of Vientiane’s main thoroughfares, yet having only been open for a few weeks, still remains “below the radar”. Perch yourself on a bar stool, cosy up in a corner or enjoy the morning sun on the small, but inviting, front patio and be prepared to while away a couple of hours.
I so covet this table!

When the coffee is this good, what more do you need?
We come for the excellent coffee (that espresso macchiato!) using locally sourced Lao beans from Pakse and the fresh egg and salmon bagels. More importantly, being one of the few dog-friendly cafes in Vientiane, we come because we can have a lesuirely brunch, sitting outside after our dog walk along the Mekong. The food is fresh, simple and homemade. Breakfast options include homemade bagels with eggs and a variety of toppings such as salmon or prosciutto. Apart from eggs there are waffles, pancakes and assorted muffins to start the day.
Perfect partners homemade bagel topped with salmon, eggs, cream cheese and dill!
Try the “Pink Guava” cold-pressed juice (guava, watermelon, pineapple and mint)
Fluffy pancakes served with glazed banana and mulberry cream
Lunches consist of light meals including platters of meats or salmon served with pickles, salad and sourdough bread, assorted focaccia and open-faced sandwiches. Fresh cold-pressed juices, fruit shakes, hot chocolate and an assortment of teas are available for those who don’t drink coffee, but we come here for the coffee! Choose from all your espresso based favourites: ristretto, latte, cappuccino, macchiato, or indeed an amazing espresso. Make sure you check out their cold brew, either straight-up or with milk, perfect for now the weather is warming up.

Cold-brew coffee on ice
We simply adore their espresso macchiato and cold-pressed juices setting us up for a leisurely start to our Sunday. All in all, this is a winner and a new favourite.
